Exact Match Domains are domain names that exactly match the keyword a website wants to compete for. For example if a website wants to rank for ‘Personal Injury Solicitor’ it might pick up the domain www.personalinjurysolicitor.co.uk.
For some time Exact Match Domains have bought a competitive advantage in the online market, until the most recent “low quality” Exact Match Domain (EMD) update.
Matt Cutts has directly stated that “low quality” Exact Match Domains would begin to see themselves falling in the SERPS. Shortly after the update, Mozcast illustrated a big dip in their chart for EMD influence in the top 10 search results for any given phrase:
This has come as no surprise to anyone going for EMDs as there has constantly been an ever going argument as to how much weight Google gives away to those domains containing keywords.
On a personal level I do think that Exact Match Domains to some extent were already damaging themselves – I would never buy from a site such buyiphone4online.com as it doesn’t sound like an established brand. I would much rather buy off theiphonecompany.com as it sounds more reliable.
The EMD update I think is a fair one, I mean take a look at the two following websites https://bestdentistlondon.com/ and https://www.golfbreaks.com/. Care to take a guess which one suffered after the update?
I don’t think that this is the end for Exact Match Domains but rather the beginning of the end for an EMD that doesn’t hold much weight on the internet. If you just got hit by this update then I strongly suggest a more balanced approach to your online marketing campaign rather than cashing in on the high ranking of your site, courtesy of exact match domains.
