Does Google Modify their ranking to Identify Spammers?

Earlier this week, Bill Slawski from SEO By The Sea shared a new patent he had stumbled across called ‘Ranking Documents’.  Essentially, the document states that Google may ‘modify’ (they say modify, I say ‘manipulate’) the ranking of a website if they believe the webmaster has used a technique that violates their Webmaster Guidelines.

Google’s Webmasters Guidelines are about as clear as a three year olds handwriting, but in the patent they identify some of the rank-modifying techniques they are referring to:

  • Keyword Stuffing – Using a targeted keyword (or set of words) repeatedly on a page to make it appear more relevant to those keywords for the search engines.
  • Invisible text – Placing keywords on the page that are the same colour background or given the ‘display: none’ attribute so they are invisible to human users.
  • Tiny text – The use of keywords in very small text on a page.
  • Redirects – A page may be created using spam techniques to make it appear relevant to the search engines for a number of search terms.  When the user clicks to view the page, they are redirected somewhere else irrelevant to their initial query.
  • Meta tag stuffing – overuse of keywords in Meta tags where the keywords might not always relate to the content on the page.
  • Link-based manipulation – I’m not really sure anybody knows what this means anymore…so here’s the definition from the patent – “Link-based manipulation may include the creation or manipulation of a first document or a set of first documents to include a link or a number of links to a second document in an attempt to increase the rank of the second document. Some existing search engines determine the rank of a document based on the number or quality of the links that point to the document.”

I guess for the majority of people, the only item of any concern there would be ‘link-based manipulation’, purely because it is something that is so hard to define.  Unfortunately, this patent may only serve to make any definition even more ambiguous.

The Google ‘Transition Function’

It is common practice for Webmasters to make changes to their website in order to improve how well it ranks.  These changes might include rewriting the content, or improving the internal link structure, as examples. 

The ranking that the site originally has before the changes are made is called the “old rank”, and the rank the website achieves after the changes is known as the “target rank”.  The ‘transition function’ may cause a ‘transition rank’ to be interposed between the “old rank” and the “target rank”.  The purpose of the ‘transition rank’ is to achieve the following things:

  • Time-based delay response
  • A negative response
  • A random response
  • An unexpected response to occur during the transition from “old rank” to “target rank”

The patent provides us with a handy definition of the ‘transition function’:

The rank transition may provide confusing indications of the impact on rank in response to rank-modifying spamming activities.

This should be alarming to anyone who works in SEO for several reasons.  Firstly, it means we are relying on Google to correctly identify ‘rank-modifying spamming techniques’, and because of the ambiguity that surrounds what classes a ‘spamming technique’, I don’t trust them to do this accurately. 

If the patent is active, it makes it even harder to determine cause and effect, which as people know is nearly impossible in search engine optimisation anyway.  If you build new links to your website and it increases in rank, it would appear that the creation of those links has had a positive effect.  However, if the patent is active and Google believes it has violated their quality guidelines, you might suddenly see rankings plummet to the ‘target rank’ without knowing what has occurred.

This piece of Uranium is more transparent than Google.  Notice the use of the word ‘confusing’ in the definition of the ‘transition function’?  Well, in my opinion, companies that are striving towards transparency don’t attempt to confuse the people that use their service.

Of course, the existence of this patent doesn’t necessarily mean it is active, but judging by the Penguin update this year and how Google are treating links and link building, it is certainly plausible. 

I can understand that Google want to protect their algorithm, and the quality of their search results (which still remain the best), but for the majority of people who are practicing perfectly legitimate and ethical SEO, this is yet another hurdle for us to overcome.  I don’t know if this patent is active, but I’d still like to hear your thoughts on what it could mean for the SEO industry if it is?
