5 Ways You Can Give Your Brand More Personality

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Ah, Valentine’s Day: a day we set aside to celebrate love and romance in all its forms… but mostly by buying heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, last-minute flowers from the petrol station, and little stuffed bears holding cushions that say ‘I Love You!’, ‘Be My Valentine!’ and ‘Please Help Me To Make My Brand More Exciting So People Buy My Stuff!’

While I haven’t (yet) seen any of those last ones on the shelves in Tesco’s seasonal aisle, I’m willing to bet that, like me, today is most likely just another day in SEO paradise for you, and you’re still scratching your head trying to figure out how you can make your brand more interesting and click-worthy in 2024.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and researching about this over the last couple of weeks, trying to make sure I came up with some decent tips to share, and have settled on the below 5:

  1. Make the most of blunders

Instead of panicking and backtracking if, for instance, one of your employees accily updates the company’s Twitter account rather than their own with an intimate Tweet, try to take this unfortunate event as a marketing opportunity and a chance to show that your brand has a sense of humour.

Don’t grovel and plead and beg for forgiveness, or be too serious about the little ‘accident’ – instead, make light of it, like the American Red Cross did when a female employee posted details about her upcoming night of drunkenness on her employer’s Twitter page.

Obviously, this tip can only be applied to the more light-hearted blunders (you don’t want to get your company involved in really hot-button political issues or put a spin on controversial comments, especially not like the one KitchenAid had to deal with) – but still worth bearing in mind if you suffer a reputation management gaffe and want your business to come out looking better at the end of it.

  1. Don’t be too obvious

The worst thing you can do is make it obvious that you’re trying to jump on the eccentric advertising bandwagon. Too often I see companies trying to sell me stuff by acting like Innocent Drinks, with their quirky little anecdotes, all lower-case text and cute, unafraid use of light cuss words.

Your brand needs to find its own voice, rather than just copy somebody else’s – so while it’s useful to see what successful brands’ marketing strategies are, you shouldn’t directly mimic them. It makes you look inauthentic and like you’re trying too hard… and it’s pretty easy for consumers to spot this, too.

To figure out your brand’s particular voice, take notice of how people in your business talk to one another and how you can put this sort of informal dialogue into a Tweet or blog, rather than writing every update like a school essay.

  1. Don’t be scared of not appealing to everyone and his dog

Be a bit of an oddball on your company’s social networking sites – even if the humour seems niche and a bit weird.

Book store Waterstones’ Oxford Street Twitter account is a perfect example of this. In the month of January alone they posted 5 successive Tweets about how The Catcher in the Rye protagonist Holden Caulfield was apparently working with them and throwing a strop about ‘phonies’, and even pitched an idea for a fourth instalment of the Jurassic Park film franchise.

 

If you’re too scared to say something that not everyone will find amusing, you’ll end up sticking to generic updates that say nothing at all. That’s ten times more off-putting than some silly comment that only half of your customers might find funny. It’ll get them talking, too – when was the last time you saw a boring Twitter update and told your friends all about it?

  1. Be topical

Instead of making every Tweet or Facebook status update about an industry event, try to be a bit more topical. Not everything has to relate back to your company, and people will see that your business is active and current if you demonstrate an awareness and interest in something other than your products. We’re all human and have lives outside of work, after all, and it always pays to remind customers that your business is made up of individuals rather than well-oiled parts.

Bear in mind that you can blend humour and topic stories into your brand’s blog and social networking accounts, but you will need to balance this out with some traditionally professional and serious material as well. People still need to take you seriously.

  1. Explore different types of content

Content marketing is already a major buzzword for 2024 – but don’t make the mistake of thinking that content is synonymous with copy.

Having explanatory text on your webpages and in your blog is great, but it always pays to branch out a little bit and see what other forms of content you can use to get your message across. Including images, videos and infographics makes your brand appear multifaceted.

It’s much more authentic to convey your brand as fun and exciting by including humorous or interesting images, rather than writing reams and reams of bad puns that just scream “Like me, please! I’m witty and satirical! We would get on well if we had a chat down at the pub because I’m down to earth!”
