5 Reasons I’m Moving To Feedly from Google Reader

Introducing Feedly!

For those of you that haven’t heard, Google Reader will be switched off from the 1st of July. For those of you that have heard, but aren’t sure what you’re going to do with your life after Google pull the plug, here’s my advice… stop the tears, give yourself a hug and tell yourself “everything is going to be ok”. Then follow the masses and head on over to Feedly.com.

If you’re a fan of numbers then check these out. Within 48 hours of Google breaking the news that the Google Reader was going to be mothballed Feedlys’ subscriptions rocketed by almost half a million new members. At the time of writing this article a lifehacker pole asking readers to recommend a new RSS reader had Feedly out in front with 67.5% of the votes. Over three times the number of the next most popular Reader. Still not convinced? Read on to find out 5 reasons why I’m taking my business to Feedly.

 

Integration.

Firstly I’m going to start with just how easy it is to make the switch from Google Reader to Feedly. It’s extremely clean and quick. Feedly already has in place a system for Google Reader users to migrate all their RSS feeds into Feedly with one click as long as they are logged into their Google account, seeing as I’m constantly using one Google product or another this process took me seconds. Feedly even makes integration of your Twitter and Facebook account seamless as they already have in place the Oauth system. If you’re looking for a quick and easy switch, Feedly gets big points. They’re even planning ahead, once the news broke of the imminent demise of Google, Feedly swung into action with a long term plan to allow users to resurrect their Google feeds once Reader goes down.

 

Readability.

 

For me, this one is a big issue. I’m a massive fan of www.readability.com and the work they are doing trying to implement micro-formats into articles to make for an easier reading experience. For me the whole point of using an RSS is to cut down on the distractions within a page so I can get to the real issues in the article. Feedly achieves this quite nicely with a simple, clutter free layout, free from too much visual “noise”. The ability to change background colours may seem like a vanity feature for some, but being able to switch to a darker background colour really can help save on some eye strain if you’re prone to reading with the lights down low. Also being a dyslexic I find it much easier to concentrate for longer periods of time with a darker background.

 

User Experience.

 

Feedly have taken a minimalist approach to their website set up, after all you’re using an RSS primarily to help cut down on the chore of crawling through a web that seems to concentrate more and more on adverts each day. Simple integration, simple readability and a choice of user options that don’t overwhelm or detract from the content all help Feedly stand out in the race to take over from Google Reader.

 

 

 

Content Suggestion.

Feedly does a fine job of helping you organise your feeds already, but if you’ve had to go through the same old dance of hunting down good sources for your RSS fix before then you’ll be relived to find that Feedly already features a searchable “best of the web” section that allows you to tap into what other people view as authorities on a subject. I’m a big fan of this, and it is something I’ve seen implemented elsewhere with other sites, but somehow with Feedly it just feels cleaner and more simplistic.

 

Plugins and Cross Platform Support.

 

Gone are the days when it was one desktop pc to a household. In our home alone we rack up 4 laptops, two desktops, a chrome book, a tablet and a handful of smart phones. I demand to be able to get my content just as easily at home at my desk, at my place of work or on the go. Feedly delivers. Their plug-ins covers chrome and Firefox and both work extremely well. The website scales fairly well down to low screen sizes, both in landscape and portrait and still maintains that clean UX that I’m looking for.

 

Overall I’m happy to be taking my business to Feedly, along with over 500,000 other users.
