USN 707719-A: Grumman F9F-2 Panther, May 1950. New Letter Marking Authorized for Navy and Marine Corps Planes. The Navy has modified its aircraft marking specifications to authorize painting the word “Navy” or “Marines” in large letters on both sides of the fuselage and on the under surface of the left wings of Navy or Marine Corps planes. The new markings, which will be white on blue aircraft and black on other color planes, were authorized to facilitate identification of Navy and Marine Corps planes from ground and at close range. Present lettering is too small to be readable at any considerable distance. Photograph released May 7, 1950. Official U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
